Grace Slick

Grace Slick, in several ways, became the image for drug abuse in the 1960’s. She wrote the anthem of the time period, “White Rabbit” which is loosely linked to the C.S. Lewis story, Alice in Wonderland, featuring substance abuse suggestions. The anthem was responsible for catapulting Jefferson Airplane and Grace Slick to fame. She admits she experimented with drugs in her younger years but her substance of choice was always alcohol. Grace smashed her automobile into a structure close to the Golden Gate Bridge in 1971 doing 80 mph driving under the influence. She credits several arrests to being drunk. At another point, Slick planned to put LSD into the beverage of then President Nixon at a White House affair. Slick went to rehab in 1978 for alcohol over use. Sober since the 1980s, Slick chose to have a music career but never matched the success of Jefferson Airplane or Jefferson Starship. By the 1990s, Slick had left music and focused on art. During an interview with CNN Entertainment, she labeled herself as a nonpracticing alcoholic – a person that doesn’t consume alcohol but remains to be an alcoholic.
